Transformer saves town from blackout
When an electricity supply company had a problem that threatened to black-out thousands of homes and businesses, it turned to Leeds-based Winder Electrical for help.
Transformers aid in green energy strategy
Clarke Energy has a reputation for green energy solutions, and has been buying Winder equipment for seven years.
The transformer, one of three at the company's site in Lynemouth near Ashington, was vital to give the aluminium producer the production flexibility needed - so prompt action was essential.
Winder worked 24 hours a day to complete the job, which involved decommissioning the 20 tonne, 12MVA transformer, transporting it to Leeds, fully replacing all three phases of the windings and reinstalling it - all within four weeks.
Alcan Senior Electrical Engineer Rob McCubbin explains: "We need 420MW of electricity on site to feed into the aluminium smelter".

Refurbishment is economical option
Don't replace - refurbish, is the latest trend in the power engineering industry as a means of offsetting the cost of the bigger more expensive new transformers and switchgear.
Telescopic probe aids in-flight refuelling
Having worked with Flight Refuelling for the last four years, Pershore based Accura Geneva has seen the relationship develop into one that is today an example of a true partnership between companies.
"When we discovered a fault with one of the transformers it was urgent that we had it repaired as quickly as possible in order that we maintained the secure supply we need".
McCubbin continued: "To help make a decision I contacted a number of colleagues to get a recommendation and the name Winder came up with some very positive feedback".
And once Winder was given the go-ahead to complete the work McCubbin couldn't fault the service.
In fact he described the team that visited the site initially to evaluate the problem as a "credit to the company".
And although McCubbin had not used Winder before he would certainly use them again, and recommend the service: "Speed really was of the essence with this contract so that we could get the transformer back on site and operational as quickly as possible".
"The Winder team were efficient and professional and turned the job around very quickly - just as agreed".
The Leeds based company has been at the forefront of the industry for over 100 years and has won a number of high profile contracts recently, including being chosen by Transmanche Link to supply the power for the construction of the Channel Tunnel.
Winder is delighted with the praise from Alcan.
General Manager Paul Matthews said: "We understood from the outset that it was vital to get the machine repaired and back in service as soon as possible".
"This is one of the things that we are renowned for at Winder, and it's encouraging that there was such positive feedback about the company within the industry".
"We have the flexibility within the workforce to move to 24 hour working when necessary".
"We worked to a tight deadline to get the transformer rewound and back on site".
Summing up, McCubbin said overall the level of service received from Winder was excellent - "a good job, well done".
