Elekta specified Norbro 75 Series electric actuators for the cooling system of its specialist radiotherapy devices.

Specialist radiotherapy devices (linear accelerators) designed by Elekta are playing a major role in the fight against cancer in the UK's hospitals The company, a global leader in the treatment of cancer and brain disorders is a pioneer in developing new techniques and equipment

Its Elekta Precise digital accelerators have to be highly reliable - any downtime would directly impact on treatment waiting lists at a most stressful time for patients.

And they also have to be extremely robust - the units must be able to cope with harsh treatment within a busy hospital environment.

These considerations were to the fore in the design of the cooling system that enables continuing, safe operation of the Elekta Precise digital accelerator.

Elekta specified Norbro 75 Series electric actuators from Flowserve Flow Control, linked to flow and temperature sensors, and operating Worcester A44 three-piece ball valves, to control the flow of water maintaining acceptable temperature levels for the waveguide system and throughout the unit.

As well as maintenance-free operation, key advantages of the 75 Series are its lightweight and compact design - the actuator measures 196 x 170 x 205mm - important factors for machines that must be readily mobile in an environment where space can be at a premium.
