Magnetic scanning revolutionises encoders

An Eriks UK product story

Wyko has a new range of single-turn encoders that are set to change the market for good.

Wyko has a new range of single-turn encoders that are set to change the market for good.

The new devices from Baumer Electric employ innovative solid state 'magnetic scanning' technology to give high-resolution positional feedback at a previously unattainable price.

The MagRes series is claimed to break through the existing price barrier associated with other traditional absolute encoder solutions, offering precision positional feedback for as low as a quarter of the established price.

The range includes two types, the BMSK which is supplied in a kit form ostensibly for OEM use in applications such as electric motors and the BMSH version, an enclosed unit type designed as a direct replacement for existing encoder applications.

Both units are absolute encoders that use a Hall-effect magnetic scanning technique to give up to 1024 steps per rev sensing resolution.

They are available with SSI or parallel interface options providing the user with convenient design flexibility.

Parallel units offer 9bit resolution and SSI models offer improved 10bit resolution.

The sense of direction and zero-point orientation is programmable in both versions adding greatly to ease of setup.

The BMSK version has an additional benefit in that it is highly compact in size, the body OD is only 42mm and extends just 15.5mm behind a standard synchro-flange mounting.

Wyko expects that this feature combined with a resale price comparable to a basic incremental encoder could cause a significant change in the market.

Engineers now have the option to upgrade machine specifications without a price penalty and other companies will be able to improve margins on existing products that require more precise feedback.

The new encoders are universally applicable to turning shaft applications requiring positional feedback data and are ideal for highly dynamic applications up to 6000rev/min.

Installation is simply a case of fixing screws and plug-in connectors.

Units are rated to IP50 ingress protection and can withstand ambient temperatures from -20 to +85C.

Housings are lightweight aluminium with composite flanges and are IEC rated for tolerance to shock and vibration.

BMSK and BMSH units are being stocked in the UK and will be available via any of Wyko's national network of over 140 locations.

Branches will also provide expert technical advice and sales support on Baumer products which compliment the wide range of industrial automation products now available to Wyko customers.

This includes systems integration and programming.
