Within nine days of being asked to quote for the project, PWI had submitted a detailed offer, including full engineering drawings.
This is understandable when one considers that the complete unit weighs in at over 17t and supplies oil at 2100 litre/min at 280bar pressure to the test rig control cylinders.
The oil is drawn out of the giant 10kl reservoir by two 1400 litre/min boost screw pumps driven by a pair of 37kW motors.
The oil is then fed through large bore pipe work to a series of six axial piston pumps powered by 190kW motors, three either side of the tank.
Reflecting on the feasibility of the project, White recalls that: "The customer, who has a long history of specifying hydraulic systems, hardly believed it was possible to meet the deadlines given.
However, the unit was delivered to the Middle East on time due to the fact that many of the required skills of design, fabrication,hydraulic fitting and test are permanently onsite here, avoiding reliance on outside specialists".
He continues, "For example, our team here at the Coventry Fluid Power Centre took the original plans for the unit and considerably enhanced the design despite the time constraints.
Also, the pressure rating of the unit required the large bore pipe work to be specially welded and fashioned in a quite intricate design, which involved nearly one hundred welded joints".
Wyko Fluid Power's production capabilities in terms of equipment and space allowed them to build the complete unit and test the system up to 300bar on site.
This alone required the purchasing and handling of 12kl of ISO VG 32 mineral oil and installation of an 800kVA diesel engine driven generator.
Another factor in the success of the project was the way that divisions of the Wyko group and supply partners such as Brook Crompton, Rexroth and Pall work together.
