The new Fenner GT integral motor gearbox unit is designed to provide the benefits of automation while retaining the convenience of manual speed control in tough working environments.

The new Fenner GT integral motor gearbox unit from Wyko is designed to provide the benefits of automation while retaining the convenience of manual speed control in tough working environments.

IP65 sealing and waterproofed electrical components ensure significantly improved reliability, accuracy and maintenance levels over traditional mechanical variable speed drives.

The new units are supplied ready-to-run with application specific factory presets but can easily be integrated into fieldbus based control systems.

Typical applications include extracting conveyors, metering screws and centrifugal pumps.

By using the Fenner GT to manage start/stop phases and adapt speed cycles, systems designers and maintenance engineers in all industries can improve efficiency and reduce the risks associated with interruptions, flow irregularities and load handling.

The Fenner GT is also expected to be popular with engineers who are replacing more traditional mechanical variable speed drives and still prefer to retain a familiar manual speed control option.

Roger Evans of Wyko Industrial Services explains: "There are thousands of examples of cone type, pulley and belt or ball and plate mechanical variable speed units in use that are reaching the end of their service life".

"These have proved popular in the past due to the fact that an operator can control the systems manually without having to go to a remote control panel".

"However, due to the diminishing number of manufacturers, having these units repaired is becoming more difficult and expensive".

"This is why we have introduced the Fenner GT range of integral motor gearbox units, because they offer a complete drop-in replacement for the older systems, including a simple onboard manual speed control knob".

The external control options provide for speed adjustment, stop/start or forward-reverse operation, making the units ideal for use on conveyors in process systems such as bottling and packaging.

Speed control in pumping can be achieved via the inbuilt PI regulator or through easy integration with Profibus DP, Interbus S, DeviceNet or CANopen fieldbus networks.

The new units combine the precise speed control and running efficiency of a variable speed drive (VSD) and the proven reliability of Fenner M, C, F and K gearheads.

The VSD option means that users can avoid the expensive maintenance caused by wear and tear on traditional friction based speed variators and the complicated programming procedures and costly wiring of separate drive control units.

Delivered preprogrammed with optimised drive settings, the units are effectively plug-and-play with factory presets suitable for pumping, materials handling and ventilation applications from 0.25 to 11kW.

The drive housing is sealed to IP65 and features non water retentive cooling fins that allow the drive to operate between -20 and +40C using just natural convection cooling.

The self-protected IGBT module and waterproofed controller circuitry are also moulded into a solid resin block to eliminate risks associated with vibration and humidity, making the units ideal for outdoor applications in quarrying and pumping systems as well as clean room environments such as those in food manufacture and processing industries.

The VSD package is also specifically designed to give dynamic control of transient phases with braking capacity for complete control of load displacement, providing safe operation in all applications.

Units automatically adapt the connection parameters in all single and three phase mains power supplies to provide a steady output despite fluctuations in power supply.
