Contract covers naval motor refurbishment

An Eriks UK product story

Wyko has won a contract to receive all the motors and pumps for repair or replacement from four Royal Navy frigates undergoing refits.

A three year single source repair and site maintenance contract for rotating equipment signed this month with Portsmouth based Fleet Support (FSL) means that Wyko will receive all the motors and pumps for repair or replacement from four Royal Navy frigates undergoing refits.

Wyko's expert Marine Services Team will also undertake switchboard, generator, and wiring overhaul and refurbishment work onboard the ships.

Jon Mayoh, Lewis Fisher and Mike Brook from Wyko led the successful Wyko tender.

Mike Brook comments: "We supplied a comprehensive proposal and our local team lead by Jim Rive have worked well with FSL on previous contracts, and we feel that this gave FSL confidence in us to deliver".

"We believe the unbiased way we are able to offer the best solution to a maintenance question was also a strong factor - whether it be a repair or a component replacement requirement", "Wyko can deliver either, with a guarantee, from within our own organisation".

The contract win has come about at the right time for Wyko as FSL has the order to refit HMS Richmond and announced at the beginning of September that it had also been awarded a multi-million-pound contract by BAE Systems to overhaul, prepare and transfer three Royal Navy type 23 frigates, HMS Grafton, HMS Marlborough and HMS Norfolk to the Chilean Navy.

Wyko will carry out condition testing and visual inspections of the ships motors and pumps, including electrical, thermal, noise, vibration and lubrication analysis.

The data will be used to identify any potential issues and enable Wyko to judge the cost and timescale of repairs.

Any repairs that are carried out will be guaranteed and are likely to boost performance and efficiency as well as improving reliability.

Environmental factors such as increased moisture levels, salt and extreme ambient operating temperatures will also be factored in.

Wyko repair or replace over 10,000 motors each year and specialise in all aspects of motor replacement; from condition monitoring to conducting motor efficiency and usage surveys, supplying both full repairs to any sise motor and providing new motors off-the-shelf from 0.25kto 250kW and above.

Wyko' s Marine Division specialises in providing vessels of all sizes with guaranteed repairs both in-dock, at their intended destination and out at sea.

The services available include mechanical engineering, electrical work, condition monitoring and access to a worldwide product supply network.

Wyko is also a member of the ISES (International Ship Electrical and Engineering Services) Association, guaranteeing quality workmanship.

Work is carried out by teams of qualified engineers who are supported by a nationwide network of over 140 distribution centres, 35 workshops and a fleet of on-site mobile stores units.
