Powder coating system offers instant cure

A Xiom Europe product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Aug 28, 2008

The Xiom 1000 is a handheld gun using oxygen, propane and air that takes powder coating out of the factory and into the field.

The oil pipeline industry is the latest sector now trialling UK based Xiom Europe's revolutionary instant-cure powder coating system.

Engineers at the Tenghis/Chevroil pipeline project in the extreme subzero climate of Kazakhstan recently put the Xiom 1000 machine to the test, applying anticorrosion coatings to welded pipe field joints, with impressive results.

As in the many other sectors showing interest in this new technology, the appeal for the pipeline industry lies in the system's ability to deliver top grade results without the large costly plant traditionally needed to heat-cure powder coatings.

Following the Kazakhstan trial, engineers have been working to adapt the technology for application, not just to jointing, but to coat the external surfaces of whole pipes, on a large scale, in the field.

Currently pipeline is pre-coated in factories in France before the long-haul ship out to oilfields like the Tenghis, and routinely arrives with the coating damaged and in need of high-cost repair.

The new adapted system is undergoing further DSC testing, but preliminary results are described as "excellent".

The versatile Xiom 1000, a handheld gun using oxygen, propane and air, is completely portable, lightweight and useable on-site, anywhere, taking powder coating out of the factory and into the field.

Users can apply specialised powder coatings such as nylons, epoxies, thermosets, thermoplastics, antislip and glow-in-the-dark, to virtually any surface, including concrete, wood, glass fibre, aluminium, steel, glass, polyurethane and more.

The kit is up and running within an hour and results are top quality, achieved at a fraction of the cost of conventional factory-based, powder coating processes.

Launched this year, to accompany the original gun is the high production rate, wide spray Xiom 5000 Scorpion.

The Scorpion sprays at up to five times the rate of the Xiom 1000, uses the same control console with minimum modification, and brings the same portability and high quality results.
