Radio technology enhances accelerometers

A Xsens Technologies product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Aug 11, 2008

UWB based tracking technology is complementary to Xsens' inertial based motion tracking, essentially adding the equivalent of an indoor GPS system to Xsens' current range of products.

Xsens Technologies has acquired the assets of Utellus, a privately held technology company with deep knowledge of impulse-radio UWB technology and applications.

The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Utellus was founded in 2003 as a spin-off from Ericsson EuroLabs in Enschede, The Netherlands.

Utellus has successfully demonstrated UWB technology for accurate position tracking at high update rates for several applications.

"Utellus has a unique level of in-depth experience and knowledge of impulse-radio UWB based systems".

"Specifically, their knowledge of UWB technology for high-accuracy real-time tracking in exceptionally challenging environments is very exciting for us here at Xsens", said Per Slycke founder and CTO of Xsens.

"UWB based tracking technology is complementary to Xsens' inertial based motion tracking, essentially adding the equivalent of an indoor GPS system to Xsens' current range of products".

Fred Dijkstra, founder and CEO of Utellus added "With Xsens there is a strategic fit on a technological level".

"The opportunities for accurate 6DoF tracking solutions combined with the freedom of movement that inertial sensors offer open up new possibilities for wide area tracking solutions".

"With this incorporation, we will combine our knowledge and implement 'best-of-both-worlds' solutions for our customers".
