Woodworking company seeks CNC solution

Three existing Yaskawa Servopack servo drives were replaced a Ferrari CNC machine's panel.

Italian woodworking machine tool manufacturer SCM approached Yaskawa Engineering Europe (EEU) in Milan for a solution to a problem on the X-axis of one of its existing SCM Record 2-111/8695 CNC routers in use at furniture manufacturer Ferrari in Verona.

SCM group was established in 1952 as a manufacturer of woodworking machines for small workshops.

Recently, a SCM customer - Ferrari - required a CNC router to be serviced.

SCM contacted EEU to provide the solution.

In the event, EEU suggested re-engineering the CNC panel on the machine and was commissioned by SCM to visit the Ferrari factory and complete an upgrade.

Essentially three existing Yaskawa Servopack servo drives were replaced within the machine's panel with the latest state of the art models.

There was no need to replace the servomotors, hence the mechanics and structure of the machine was untouched.

Only the X-axis required urgent engineering.

Even the control panel space was not compromised.

The existing CNC software was likewise unaffected.

The upgrade took EEU's experienced engineers a single day to complete and productivity was not disrupted since the work was carried out within the scheduled downtime.

SCM were so impressed with the service provided by EEU, the company has appointed Yaskawa Engineering Europe to perform future SCM re-engineering projects and upgrades.

Maurizio Dinatale, of Yaskawa Engineering Europe in Milan, commented: "There are thousands of machine tools in use throughout the world that use former generation servo technology".

"Many of these machines can be brought up to date and gain substantial quality or throughput payback at minimal cost by effecting simple upgrades".
