Distributed control for smaller plants

A Yokogawa product story

A new distributed control system offers greatly enhanced functionality with the inclusion of a new compact controller that enables the system to accommodate a wider range of applications.

The latest version of Yokogawa's flagship Centum CS3000 distributed control system offers greatly enhanced functionality with the inclusion of a new compact controller that enables the system to accommodate a wider range of applications, including small-scale plants.

The new FFCS compact controller for small- and medium-scale plants is only 20% of the size of a conventional controller, but has the same reliable architecture, control functions and fully redundant configuration as the controllers used for larger plants.

The Centum CS3000 R3.04 also offers enhanced Fieldbus capabilities.

It supports ProfiBus DP-V1: the standard now being adopted for discrete manufacturing processes.

The system's Foundation Fieldbus capability is also improved, giving smaller systems the ability to use functions - integrated operation and monitoring environments and full redundancy, for example - that are normally only found on large systems.

Increased subsystem connectivity is also provided via a subsystem gateway station using OPC (OLE for Process Control): the industry-standard, general-purpose interface used in process control.

This facility provides improved interfacing with electrical facilities, machining equipment, and other subsystems.

"The development of the Centum CS3000 has been based on the concept of continually adopting new functions while maintaining continuity with existing functions", comments Martin Ward, Managing Director of Yokogawa UK.

"The system has evolved in response to changing customer needs and through the ongoing development and introduction of leading-edge technologies, and the addition of the FFCS controller maintains this approach by opening up a whole new application sector in small- to medium-scale plants".
