The VISA e-Logbook is the latest electronic plant optimisation tool from Yokogawa Marex.

The VISA e-Logbook is the latest electronic plant optimisation tool from Yokogawa Marex.

Part of the VISA (value-added information sourced applications) suite of operational excellence solutions (OES), e-Logbook is a valuable addition to the Yokogawa family.

During sessions of its customer focus programme, Yokogawa Marex identified that large volumes of manual-entry plant information were being lost, and developed VISA e-Logbook to record this information electronically, to improve customers' business processes.

Manual information is traditionally recorded in paper logbooks.

This includes shift hand over notes and instructions given to operatives; nonelectronic information cannot be easily analysed or used to improve the business.

VISA e-Logbook replaces this manual data and allows it to be integrated into the OES environment for conversion into valuable plant optimisation information.

One of the first companies to use VISA e-Logbook was Acordis, at its acetate products works near Derby.

Phil Baskerville the Senior Business Systems Analyst at Acordis says: "The use of VISA e-Logbook in our business has enabled much improved communications and handover between shift teams".

"The system has allowed these teams to see at a glance what issues are affecting them now and where efforts should be focused".

"It has also had an added benefit of improving communications and visibility between different teams".

When configured with company email systems, VISA e-Logbook can e-mail end of shift reports to incoming team leaders, ensuring the right people have the right information at the right time.

It can be implemented as a stand-alone application and can be based on either an Oracle or MS SQL database, ensuring maximum flexibility.

By using established company standards, the system blends with existing manufacturing execution systems (MES) applications, providing enriched operational information that is integrated with existing solutions.

The data parameters are context-sensitive and can be selected from drop-down lists, ensuring consistency of data entry.

The power of this solution has already been proven at Acordis.

Phil Baskerville adds: "All of the data from VISA e-Logbook being logged to our business database has enabled detailed and focused reporting and analysis to be done".

"The ease of use has made it take off quickly, with minimal training being required".

"It is now part of our standard PC builds".

There are also important implementations of VISA e-Logbook at plants in Holland, Germany, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
