Science showcase provides bite-size profile

A Yorkshire Forward product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Oct 12, 2006

Innovation leaders attending the first Yorkshire Science and Technology Network Showcase this week will hear that true success can lie in looking at the really, really little picture.

Companies are often told that the secret of business success is being able to see the bigger picture - be it developing markets, new customers or threats on the horizon.

So innovation leaders attending the first Yorkshire Science and Technology Network Showcase this week may be surprised to hear that true success can lie in looking at the really, really little picture - microscopic in fact.

"To understand what makes a material strong, a drug effective, a material conduct electricity or even what dictates taste we need to understand the structure and behaviour of that material, often down to understanding where each atom sits", explains Professor Roger Eccleston, Director of the Yorkshire Forward Materials Analysis and Research Services CIC (Centre of Industrial Collaboration).

Based at Sheffield Hallam University the CIC recently worked with Carrs of Sheffield, looking at the properties of silver that make it tarnish.

The work enabled the company to develop a form of tarnish resistant silver that retains its shine, and Carrs products are now gleaming on the shelves of Harrods and Selfridges.

And to launch the first in a series of industry focused showcases, Professor Eccleston will be outlining the business benefits of materials analysis and the services of the CIC to innovation business leaders from across the region.

"An often quoted, but difficult to test statistic is that approximately 25% of the US GDP depends on knowledge of quantum mechanics", explains Professor Eccleston.

The science showcases, which form part of the Yorkshire Science and Technology Network (YSTN), aim to provide a bite-size, business friendly profile of the academic expertise on offer in the region that could help businesses blossom.

"There are so many companies in the region who could benefit enormously from working with one of our leading universities".

"The aim of the science showcases is to connect businesses with new research activities or practices in the region, in a way that is focused on commercial needs and doesn't require weeks of research on the part of the company", explains Simon Hill, Executive Director of Business at Yorkshire Forward.

Remaining on the theme of small is beautiful, the next YSTN showcase event will be held in Leeds and look at the latest developments in nanotechnology and the opportunities for innovation offered by the nanofactory - a collaborative research facility led by regional experts in the field of nanotechnology - the development of products on a microscopic scale.
