Zander (UK) Ltd, specialists in the treatment of compressed air and gas, have supplied filtration and drying equipment to help the British Film Institute preserve classic British film footage.

The British Film Institute (bfi) is the custodian of the UK's moving image heritage.

It collects, preserves and shares the films and TV programmes which have helped to shape and record British life and times ever since the movies were invented over 100 years ago.

Remember classic films such as The Cruel Sea, or scenes from the days when there was no traffic on the roads? When supermarkets were corner shops and policemen on the beat blew whistles when trouble brewed? Watching a film does not just involve the sound and vision - it is a shared experience, often stirring memories and a mix of emotions.

But, as the saying goes, nothing lasts forever.

Celluloid film is notoriously unstable and deteriorates over time if left unchecked.

The J Paul Getty Conservation Centre in Hertfordshire is the base for the work of the bfi's National Film and Television Archive (NFTVA), which undertakes a painstaking programme of preservation and duplication.

Films are stored there in ideal, environmentally controlled conditions to minimise decay.

Compressed air plays a vital part in the process of copying, as all the machines run on air bearings.

If a bearing fails, hundreds of feet of celluloid may be destroyed before copying can take place.

"Play it again, Sam" To ensure high quality air bearings have a long, continuous life, it is vital that the compressed air being fed to them is free of water, oil (both liquid and vapour) and particulate.

This is where Zander (UK) Ltd and Industrial Compressed Air Ltd played their part in supplying and installing equipment to give high quality compressed air.

Zander equipment installed at the Conservation Centre consists of a Grade Z (1um) pre-filter element, an EST refrigeration dryer, and a Grade X (0.01um) coalescing filter element.

Further downstream, the equipment comprises a Zander pre-filter, KM desiccant dryer and a dust filter.

Together the Zander equipment provides a constant -25C pressure dew point.

"Make my Day" - Don Cameron at the NFTVA has a deep understanding of the potential hazards should the air quality not be just right.

But he knows that with the expert combination of Zander and Industrial Compressed Air, he's in safe hands.
