Budget gearheads cut servo system costs

A ZF Great Britain product story

The PGE range of planetary gearheads provides OEMs with the ideal vehicle to reduce costs in servomotor applications.

ZF's new range of PGE (economy) planetary gearheads provides OEMs with the ideal vehicle to reduce costs in servomotor applications.

The economy range offers high levels of accuracy, efficiency and reliability in a compact and easy to fit package that improves the competitiveness and torque performance of any machine equipped with AC or DC servomotor systems.

The new PGE gearheads are an effective answer to the constant demands to reduce costs in OEM machine building, without comprising quality and performance.

They offer all the traditional advantages of a planetary gearbox design: low weight, small size and low noise, plus a combination of high efficiency (up to 97%) and dynamic operation.

In addition, their low backlash design (as little as 10arc-min) and high degrees of torsional rigidity - the latter the result of even load distribution between three planetary gears - ensure both excellent positioning accuracy and reliability.

Although highly price competitive, the PGE gearheads provide the benefits of high reliability, precision and low-noise running from a design that includes hardened and optimised gearing geometry and high quality bearings.

This construction ensures a long nominal service life, typically 10kh,, which is maintenance-free due to the provision of lifetime grease lubrication.

The use of grease as a lubricant, rather than oil, also provides an additional benefit, enabling the PGE gearheads to be mounted flexibly in any orientation on a machine.

Maximum convenience and installation cost savings are provided to the OEM machine builder by the ability of the PGE gearheads to be integrated easily into any machine.

A simple but highly effective compression coupling ensures proper gearbox alignment to the servomotor shaft, thus overcoming the problem of reduced bearing life due to excessive preloading.

In addition, the ability of the smallest units in the PGE range to fit motor shafts of just 3mm diameter, means that the PGE units can also be used to cost effectively torque up the performance not only of servomotors but of fractional horsepower motors also.

The PGE gearheads are available in single-, twin- and three-stage variants in a range of ratios between 3:1 and 1000:1.

They offer output torques from 5 to 670Nm and are rated for motor input speeds up to a maximum of 6000rev/min.
