Gearboxes use novel backlash absorbing system

A ZF Great Britain product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Nov 29, 2004

CG compact gearboxes provide the high performance and small size required by the next generation of automation and robotics servo systems.

Offering levels of backlash below 0.5arc-min and operational efficiency of over 94%, new CG compact gearboxes from ZF provide the high performance and small size required by the next generation of automation and robotics servo systems.

The CG gear design features a multistage planetary assembly that promotes smooth operation and, coupled with an optimised alloy casing, produces a light, compact design with low torsional vibrations.

ZF's new range of CG gearboxes feature a patented backlash absorbing system (BAS), which includes a tapered gear tooth profile optimised for the highest levels of precision.

The multistage planetary servo gearboxes achieve levels of backlash of below 0.5arc-min, making them ideal for use in robotic and other automation applications such as those in the electronics and original equipment manufacturing industries.

A large output flange supported by oversized cylindrical roller bearings produces an assembly rigid and tough enough to provide output torques up to 1250Nm with low levels of torsional vibration.

Acceleration torques up to 2500Nm are achieved thanks to an interlocking power transmission design which significantly reduces length of the gearbox and provides levels of efficiency of up to 94%.

The space optimised alloy housing further reduces the design envelope and the lightweight build helps achieve low levels of inertia, improving accuracy yet maintaining mounting flexibility Available in five models with ratios from 20 to 103, the units can accept input speeds up to 5300rev/min.

Fitted with the latest Viton shaft seals, the units offer a longer service life and sealing levels up to IP65 are maintained even at these high speeds, making the units suitable for clean room applications.
