Transmission production passes landmark

A ZF Great Britain product story

ZF's AS Tronic is the most successful automatic transmission system for commercial vehicles.

ZF's has produced its 250,000th AS Tronic automatic transmission system for commercial vehicles.

The company believes economic efficiency is the main reason for the AS Tronic being so widely accepted on the market.

The automatic transmission solution always keeps the engine in the optimal running speed, meaning that the power is transferred very efficiently to the drive axles and fuel is saved.

It allows drivers to concentrate on manoeuvring the vehicle while the transmission takes over gear shifts.

It also avoids driving and shifting mistakes which lead to higher fuel consumption and increased driveline wear.

"AS Tronic, which has been in volume production for ten years now, is the most successful automatic transmission system for commercial vehicles".

"It is considered a milestone in driveline development and has meanwhile become indispensable in freight traffic",according to Wolfgang Vogel, Group Executive of the Commercial Vehicle and Special Driveline Technology division at ZF Friedrichshafen.

While the AS Tronic lite (500 to 1100Nm) and the AS Tronic mid (800 to 1600Nm) are mainly used in light delivery trucks and mid-size commercial vehicles, the larger members of this transmission family are suitable for heavy trucks and construction site vehicles.

With its 12 speeds, the AS Tronic covers the torque range from 1600 to 3100Nm while the 16-speed version offers a particularly fine spreading for engines with up to 2600nm.
