Zircotec will exhibit ceramic thermal barrier

A Zircotec product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Sep 30, 2008

Zircotec will use next January's, NEC-based Autosport Engineering exhibition to display the results of work it has been carrying out on a new ceramic thermal barrier.

The barrier will enable high strength, lightweight materials to be used in higher temperatures than previously thought possible.

This will allow composites to function in temperatures above their melting point, a reduction in surface temperature claimed to be possible of more than 125C.

Thus, it will be of interest to top-end motorsport teams for whom ceramic coating has, in the past not necessarily been a definitive solution.

The coating can be engineered to suit specific requirements, it being possible to adjust its properties both through thickness and across the surface of a component to cope with hot spots and differing forms of heat transfer such as radiant, conductive or convective heating.

Based on Zircotec's existing Thermohold technology, the new, multi-layered coating is patent applied for.

Its weight gain is minimal, as low as 0.03g/cm for some applications.
